Description

The Beloved American Novel, Signed by the Author

Margaret Mitchell. Gone with the Wind. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936. First edition, second issue, with "Published June, 1936" on copyright page; in the second issue dust jacket, with "$3.00" price in lower corner of front flap and with "Gone with the Wind" in first column on rear panel. Signed by Mitchell on the front free endpaper. Octavo. 1,037 pages. Original gray cloth decoratively stamped and lettered in blue on front cover and spine. Very minimal rubbing to cloth at extremities. Tiny nick to head of spine. With Atlanta bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Dust jacket in much better condition than is normally encountered, with a few chips along the edges and a couple of short tears. A very nice copy in better than very good condition.

By the end of 1936, over a million copies of Gone with the Wind had sold, and Margaret Mitchell's life had been turned upside down-only a couple of weeks after publication of the book she wrote her publisher that "life has been so much like a nightmare." By the end of the year she was unable to handle the crush of autograph-seekers, and she politely refused to sign any more copies of the book after December of 1936 (she declined, even, to sign a copy for her brother!). The person who managed to get this book signed was one of the lucky few.
