Description
Ernest Hemingway. The Sun Also Rises. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. First edition, third or later issue without the "vanity" verse on page [viii]. Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by the author to the front free endpaper recto, "To George wishing / we'd been in Paris together / in the old days and looking / forward to when we take it / away from the F-ing / Germans / Ernie." Octavo. [viii], 259, [5, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth with gold paper labels printed in black to upper board and spine; lacking dust jacket. Minor edgewear, corners just rubbed, head and foot of spine pushed and somewhat worn, spine with some discoloring and spine label somewhat creased with a small chip to one corner, somewhat rubbed. Cream endpapers, fore-edge rough trimmed, other edges trimmed; endpapers with some offsetting, effaced penciled booksellers' notation to the front free endpaper recto. Internally generally clean and tight; minor intermittent soiling chiefly to margins, light foxing to gutters, text block edges toned with minor wear. Housed in custom black cloth clamshell case, spine stamped in gilt. Very good.A scarce presentation copy, affectionately signed "Ernie" and inscribed to Hemingway's close friend, George Brown. Brown and Hemingway met at Brown's boxing gym in New York City; Brown initially served as Hemingway's trainer and boxing coach, but quickly became a friend and confidant. Brown was reportedly one of the only people outside of Hemingway's family to use the nickname "Ernie" and published letters between Brown and Hemingway reflect the same familiar and humorous attitude found in the inscription here. Ultimately, Brown drove Mary and Ernest home from the Mayo Clinic that fateful summer of 1961 and was present in the Hemingways' home when Ernest took his own life on July 2nd; Brown went on to serve as a pallbearer for his late friend (Lynn).
Hanneman A6a; Lynn, pages 442-423 and 592-593.
