Signed and inscribed by the author to the front free endpaper recto, "To Charles Clement / With sincere good wishes / Ernest Hemingway." Octavo. 471 pages. Publisher's beige linen with author's facsimile signature stamped in black to upper board and spine stamped in red and black; original illustrated dust jacket. Minor edgewear, spine sunned and worn, minor soiling. Hinges weak but holding, endpaper somewhat toned. Internally generally clean, fore-edge rough trimmed, other edges trimmed, top edge stained brown; some dampstaining chiefly to edges, minor foxing, text block somewhat toned in margins and with minor edgewear. Dust jacket unclipped ($2.75); heavy edgewear, chipping to head and foot of spine and corners with some losses, approximately 1 x 1-inch open tear to head of spine panel affecting text, spine split and held with cellotape, creased and somewhat worn. Very good book with fair dust jacket.

Per a laid in holograph note on the stationary of The Calico Cat Bookshop, this book was purchased from the widow of Charles Clement, to which this copy is inscribed. According to their note, Clement was the head of Post-Production for the film adaptation of For Whom the Bell Tolls (Paramount, 1943), staring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman.
