Six original watercolor drawings by Alexander King, on heavy art paper measuring 14 x 10 inches. Each drawing captioned and signed by the artist. Also included is a one-page autograph letter signed by King, to bookseller Harry Marks, writing about how he became involved with Eugene O'Neill, quoting O'Neill has having said, "'If I could draw, King, that's the way I wanted to make those fellows look.' I still agree with him [...] that the Emperor Jones is my best job." With transmittal envelope.

Six of the eight drawings King presented to Eugene O'Neill for the illustrations in the limited edition of the playwright's 1928 play, "The Emperor Jones." Contained in a custom maroon cloth chemise and quarter red morocco slipcase with gilt-lettered spine and black label to front. Fine condition.

King's wonderful illustrations for the publication of Eugene O'Neill's 1920 play, "The Emperor Jones," his first critical and box office success which launched his career and was later made into a film starring Paul Robeson. From the Estate of John McLaughlin.
