Description

A.E. van Vogt. Original Manuscript of The Witch, Inscribed and Signed.
Considered one of the greatest science fiction writers of the 1940s - the genre's Golden Age - A.E. van Vogt was also one of its most prolific writers. Offered here is the author's original typed manuscript for his fantasy tale The Witch, inscribed and signed by van Vogt on the initial page. The 38-page manuscript is heavily smudged, fingerprinted, and stained, but contains the author's penciled edits, as well as his ink inscription and signature: "For Dwain Kaiser. Best wishes of the author, A.E. van Vogt." Kaiser was the editor of an amateur publishing association, InterApa.

Published in 1942, The Witch is one of just a handful of fantasy stories written by van Vogt; he has been quoted as saying that he found fantasy difficult to write and always considered the genre "weird." However, van Vogt had a hit with this short story, which was later adapted into a Night Gallery episode, Since Aunt Ada Came to Stay, which aired in 1971. Housed in a contemporary gray cloth, black half calf slipcase with raised bands and gilt lettering on the spine. From the Robert and Diane Yaspan Collection.
