Description

A. E. van Vogt. Slan. Sauk City: Arkham House, 1946. First edition. The author's own copy with his penciled revisions. Inscribed by the author to Forrest J. Ackerman. Also, signed by van Vogt's wife, beneath her printed name on the dedication page. One of 4,000 copies. Octavo. 216 pages. In the lengthy inscription on the front free endpaper, van Vogt explains the hundreds of ink and pencil notations in his hand throughout: "In this volume I have made some of the changes that will appear in the Simon and Schuster version of 'SLAN' - to be published this fall - 1951." Van Vogt presented this copy to his friend and literary agent Forrest J. Ackerman for the purpose of auctioning it off at a science fiction convention. Black cloth over boards. Some toning to the dust jacket. Mild rubbing to the boards. Both spine of dust jacket and binding have a small plastic red "A" from a label maker, which Ackerman often used to mark his books. Also, on the spine of the dust jacket cover is one of Ackerman's triangular personal stickers. Altogether a tight and very good copy, uniquely annotated, of a science fiction classic. Barron, 267. Currey, p. 494. Schweitzer, p. 104. From the Jerry Weist Collection.
