Description
One of Fifty Copies of October Country, Specially Bound for Ray Bradbury, and Inscribed by Him Twice and with an Original Drawing

by Joe Mugnaini. New York: Ballantine, [1955]. First edition.
One of fifty copies specially bound for Bradbury to be given as
gifts to friends. Inscribed by Bradbury Qon the front free
endpaper in blue ink: "This is true -[pointing to another
inscription by him, the only portion of the inscription in pencil]
Not for/Sale/[in blue ink again, just beneath "This is true"] One
of 50/copies!/[arrow pointing down]/John!/[arrow pointing down at
an angle]/Bound by/Ballantine/in 1955/For my/Friends/and/now Ray
Bradbury/- Dec 9/1983". The inscription is written around an
original drawing of a smiling devil with exaggerated nose and chin.
On the rear free endpaper is another inscription in pencil by
Bradbury: "Not/for/Sale" and to the right of this, written in blue
ink by Bradbury: "This too!/R.B." with an arrow pointing to the
pencil inscription. Octavo. [xii], [307], [1, blank] pages.
Publisher's binding of full red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, dust
jacket. Jacket spine sunned, some edgewear (including a few minor
chips to jacket), soiling to jacket and flaps, jacket soiled and
foxed on verso, minor rubbing to binding. A very good copy, with an
excellent inscription (or inscriptions).
More Information:
This is only the second of these special copies to appear at auction in the last forty years; both were inscribed and dated decades after publication, indicating that Bradbury was very selective as to whom received them. Currey, page 57.
