Description

ROBERT HEINLEIN'S COPY OF RAY BRADBURY'S THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES

Ray Bradbury. The Martian Chronicles. Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1950.

8vo. Publisher's green cloth, spine stamped in maroon; original pictorial dust jacket.

FIRST EDITION. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the half-title. ASSOCIATION COPY with Robert A. Heinlein's stamp with his Santa Cruz address on the front pastedown.

It is likely Bradbury and Heinlein first met at a meeting of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society. The recently published Remembrance: Selected Correspondence of Ray Bradbury, edited by Jonathan R. Eller, includes a wonderful letter from Heinlein to the young Bradbury, written in August of 1940. Though Bradbury's original letter to Heinlein remains unlocated, Heinlein's response was preserved in Bradbury's papers. Heinlein instructs the young author, "I hope that you are still keeping at your writing, and that you will have some more manuscripts that I can read when we get back. You are on the right track, I am sure." Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles was published 10 years after this letter was written.

Condition: Spine lightly toned; text lightly browned. Dust jacket decoratively clipped as issued, retaining price (priced "$2.50"); mild edgewear with a few minor chips to top of spine panel; spine panel lightly toned; pale soiling to rear panel; some browning to top edges of panels. A brighter copy than usually found.

References: Currey, pp. 56-57.

Provenance: Robert A. Heinlein (ownership stamp). From the collection of David Aronovitz.
