Description

Scarce first edition in English

Jules Verne. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low & Searle, 1873.

8vo. Half-title; 112 illustrations; 8-pp. publisher's advertisements at end, headed "For the Season 1872-3." Publisher's blue pictorial cloth gilt, blocked in black and gilt, edges gilt, by Burn & Co., with binder's ticket on rear pastedown. Housed in a cloth folding case.

SCARCE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, preceding the first U. S. edition, and perhaps even rarer than the famous jellyfish vignette binding. The first edition in English was actually published in November 1872 (but dated 1873) preceding the more usual American first edition by James Osgood in Boston in 1873, using the English edition illustrations.

Verne's classic science fiction and adventure,Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, was first serialized in the French periodical the Magasin d'education et de recreation. An unrestored copy in the desirable blue cloth binding.

Condition: Spine a little darkened with some chipping and fraying at ends; minor wear to corners ; hinges cracked but holding. Erased inscription dated March 1873 on front free endpaper; over-opened at center of text block; occasional minor soiling or spotting.

References: Myers 56 (noted in green cloth).

Provenance: Claude F. Walker (small booklabel on front pastedown).
