Description

H.G. Wells. The Time Machine. London: William Heinemann, 1895. First English edition, first issue. Octavo. [viii], 152 pages with 16-page publisher's catalogue (Currey state 1). Publisher's gray buckram cloth stamped in purple (Currey binding B). Top and fore-edge untrimmed, bottom edge rough cut. Housed in a custom clamshell of marbled boards, backed in light burgundy crushed morocco, lettered and ruled in gilt.

Hammond writes, "it should be noted that there are significant differences in the text between the American edition of The Time Machine (Henry Holt & Co., 1895) and the Heinemann edition. The Heinemann edition is the final and definitive version."

Condition: Some wear and a few stains to cloth, spine sunned and a bit scuffed, head and tail of spine pushed, corners bumped and other minor edgewear. Endpapers foxed, pencil annotations to endpapers, partly erased. Penciled line through author's name on title page. Textblock a bit toned, some scattered thumbsoiling. Very good.
