H. G. Wells. The Time Machine. An Invention. London: William Heinemann, 1895. First English edition of Wells' first novel, first issue in cloth binding. Inscribed by Wells on the front free endpaper: "H. B. Marriott Watson/With the author's Kindest regards [underlined". Octavo. [viii], [152] pages. With the earliest version of the publisher's sixteen-page catalogue inserted at rear. Publisher's full tan cloth, covers and spine stamped in purple. Binding browned and somewhat soiled, lettering on spine nearly completely obscured, hinges starting, previous owner's bookplate on verso of front free endpaper, and small catalogue entry for this book affixed to bottom of the half-title. With the recipient's bookplate on the front pastedown. A good copy with an excellent association. H. B. Marriot Watson (1863-1921) was a successful British novelist and journalist. He worked with Wells at the Pall Mall Gazette, and the two were good friends. It was Watson who introduced Wells to poet and editor W. E. Henley, to whom The Time Machine is dedicated. Hammond B1. Currey p. 525. From the John McLaughlin/Book Sail Collection.
