Beautiful Copy of Herbert's Science Fiction Classic, Signed by Him

Frank Herbert. Dune. Philadelphia / New York: Chilton Books, 1965.

First edition. Signed by the author on the half-title page. Large octavo. 412 pages including multiple appendices.

Publisher's light blue cloth with white lettering to spine. In original pictorial dust jacket. Lightly rubbed cloth with softly bumped corners. Some soiling to boards. Top edge a bit toned and some spotting to fore-edge. Bookplate to front pastedown. Spine is just slightly leaning. Textblock clean and tight. A very good copy. In the original first issue color pictorial dust jacket by John Schoenherr, with the price $5.95 at the upper right corner of the front flap and the publisher's imprint in four lines at the bottom of the rear flap. Jacket with minor edge wear to extremities and general mild toning. Lightly chipped at head of spine. Just a hint of sunning along spine. Overall, a very good copy of an exceedingly rare classic of science fiction.

Herbert spent six years researching and writing this first-ever ecological sci-fi thriller, but it was rejected by numerous publishers before finally being accepted by Chilton, a minor publishing house known primarily for auto repair manuals. Although the book was not an instant bestseller, it won the 1965 Nebula Award for Best Novel and shared the 1966 Hugo Award. Dune has sold twelve million copies and counting, more than any other science fiction novel in history.
