Edward E. ("Doc") Smith. The History of Civilization, including: Triplanetary, First Lensman, Galactic Patrol, Gray Lensman, Second Stage Lensman, Children of the Lens. Reading: Fantasy Press, 1955. One of seventy-five specially bound copies (this being number 46), signed by Smith in each volume on an inserted leaf. Triplanetary has been inscribed by Smith on the limitation page: "To/Mel Stein/With my best regards/Edward E. Smith, Ph.D." Six octavo volumes. Publisher's special binding of quarter brown leather over brown cloth boards, spines lettered in gilt. Bright and fine. With the original card-stock slipcase (worn and scuffed). All now housed in custom-built folding case with leather labels and bone fastener.

Edward E. "Doc" Smith (1890-1965) was a pioneer science fiction writer, who invented the "Space Opera" genre. Many consider his Lensman series to be one of the best science fiction series ever written, second only to Asimov's Foundation series.
