Description

Edgar Rice Burroughs. An Auto-Biography. Alma, Michigan: Republic Motor Truck Company, [1917].

Small octavo. Publisher's brown suede, title and small line drawing stamped in gilt, brown satin endpapers. In-text illustrations throughout.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST VARIETY, bound in publisher's brown suede.

In 1916, Burroughs purchased a Republic truck and drove his family on a cross-country automobile safari from their home in Oak Park, Illinois, to Los Angeles, camping most of the way. The advertising manager for the Republic Motor Truck Company wrote to Burroughs after the family's trip, asking him to pen "a little book detailing your experiences with your Republic truck on your recent transcontinental journey." The resulting product was the present booklet, a nonfiction account aptly titled "An Auto-Biography," that details the family's journey, told from the perspective of the truck itself, thus the Auto's biography.

Zeuschner reports that Burroughs was told 250,000 copies would be distributed for free; it is not known how many were, in fact, published and distributed, though Zeuschner notes that this booklet is very difficult to find intact. We find only one record of this book appearing at auction, sold in these rooms in 2016.

Condition: Touch of wear to suede; else, fine.
