True first edition of Wells's debut novel, preceding the William Heinemann edition with significant textual variations. Author's name misprinted "H. S. Wells" on title page. Small octavo. [viii], 216, [2, blank], [6, advertisements] pages. Inserted frontispiece with tissue guard. Publisher's tan buckram, stamped in purple, top edge gilt. Cloth somewhat worn at front joint and along edges, corners gently bumped with minimal fraying, occasional small stains to boards. Short closed tear to half title, light offsetting to endpapers, previous owner signature. Overall a very good copy. Currey, 424. Wells 4. From the Larry McMurtry Collection of H. G.
