Albert Einstein. Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie. Leipzig: Johann Barth, 1916. Signed and dated, "A. Einstein. 49." on printed E=MC² Card. First separate edition of Einstein's general theory of relativity, with printer's imprint, "Druck von Metzger & Wittig in Leipzig" on verso of the title page and "Metzger & Wittig, Leipzig" on back wrapper. Octavo. 64 pages. Original printed wrappers; overall a bit toned, some paper residue to top left of front wrapper, purple stain to right margin of front wrapper, small green stain to back wrapper, minor spotting. Short tear to front hinge at top (approximately 2 inches; 51 mm), tear to front hinge at bottom (approximately 0.75 inches; 19 mm), tear to rear hinge at top (approximately 3 inches; 76 mm). Internally bright and clean; scattered, minor foxing. Housed in a custom three-quarter black morocco drop-back clamshell, spine decorated and stamped in gilt, with the mounted, signed equation.
