Description
A Beautiful and Complete Copy of the 1566 New Testament in English by Tyndale
[Bible in English]. [William Tyndale, translator]. The
Newe Testament of our Sauiour Iesus Christe, faithfully translated
out of the Greke with the Notes and Expositions of the darke places
therein. [London: Richard Jugge, printer to the Queenes
Maiestie, [n.d., 1566, as ascribed from the first year in the
Almanack]. The third edition of Jugge's quarto editions of
Tyndale's translation. Title-page, Calendar and Almanack printed in
red and black. Small quarto. Approximately 8.75 x 6 inches.
Collates complete as per Herbert. Illustrated with over ninety
woodcuts and over 250 woodcut initials. Beautifully bound by
Lewis (from manuscript note affixed to verso of front free
endpaper) in nineteenth-century full dark gray morocco, covers
double-ruled and paneled in gilt, spine elaborately tooled and
lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board
edges and turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endleaves. Minor
rubbing to binding, lower front corner a bit bumped, small sticker
on lower corner of front pastedown, [B8] lower margin restored,
[L8] upper corners repaired, Ggi with several repairs, [Ggvi] with
repairs and some loss, Oii in Epistles with restoration at bottom
margin, some notes shaved and a few with minor defects. A fine and
beautiful copy, complete with no facsimiles. A larger copy than
that of Bible House. With the collation notes by Quaritch
("Collated & Perfect" in pencil on recto of rear free endpaper.Herbert 121. Darlow and Moule 87. STC 2873. Fry 33.
