Description
The Rare Last Reprint of the Coverdale Bible to Appear in Coverdale's Lifetime
[Bible in English]. The Whole Byble, that is the holy
scripture of the Olde and Newe testament faythfully translated into
Englyshe by Myles Couerdale, and newly ouer sene and
correcte. [London]: Prynted For Andrewe Hester [actually
printed in Zurich by Christopher Froschover], 1550. Reprint of the
famous Coverdale Bible, first printed in 1535, and the last to
appear in Coverdale's lifetime. Text in double columns, Kalender
printed in red and black, woodcut illustration of Eve emerging from
Adam's chest on the first leaf of Genesis, woodcut initials
throughout. Quarto. Approximately 9.75 x 7.25 inches. [xiv pages],
fol. ccccxciiii, [blank page], fol. I - cxxi. Title-page and final
leaf (fol. cxxi in New Testament) are in facsimile. This copy lacks
the second leaf of the Kalender, and sixteen leaves (fols. cv to
cxx) and the three leaves of Epistles and Gospels following (all in
the New Testament). Otherwise complete. Bound to style by Thomas
Ford in twentieth-century (1938) quarter brown levant morocco over
oak boards, with metal clasps. Spine ruled and lettered in dark
brown. Minor rubbing to binding, one metal clasp missing, text
toned, foxed and soiled with ink markings and notes throughout,
several pages with chips or repairs, nineteenth-century ownership
signature on the front blank, signature of Thomas F. Ford (previous
owner and cataloguer) on the front free endpaper, with his original
typed description laid-in. A very good copy of a very rare early
English bible. Herbert 84. STC 2080.
