edition, one of 350 copies signed by Ulmann and Peterkin and with
the rare loose photogravure plate signed by Ulmann laid-in (this
being copy number 332). Quarto. Approximately 11 x 8 inches.
341, [1, signed limitation page], [2, blank] pages. With ninety
full-page hand-pulled copper photogravure plates inserted
throughout. Tissue-guards laid-in. Publisher's half linen over
brown paper beveled boards. Front board decoratively stamped in
blind, spine lettered in gilt. Spine and binding soiled, some
rubbing to binding, some offsetting to text, some edgewear to loose
signed plate. A very good copy of this magnificent work about
former slaves and their descendents in the Gullah area of South
Carolina. "Peterkin is a Southern white woman, but she has the eye
and the ear to see beauty and know truth." (W. E. B. DuBois).
