Description
The White Man Newspaper. One page, two sided, 8" x 12.5", printed on lined paper, Weatherford, Texas, February 20, 1862. Inconsistent light to moderate age toning; a few small soiled areas and tiny chips to edges. Housed in a custom gray buckram book/folder with black lettering along spine. Fine condition.Following the relocation of many Indian tribes to reservations, newspaper editors fanned the fire of racial hatred by repeatedly attacking the reservation system and demanding punishment of Native Americans for every crime committed along the frontier. John Robert Baylor and H.A. Hamner, the original co-editors of The White Man, a race-hating newspaper, led the anti-Indian North Texas frontier "filibusters" of early 1859.
For three years, the two dedicated themselves to inciting local settlers against all natives, even going so far as to attack those peaceful tribes that had proven records of assistance to the white community. At one point, Baylor's frustration with attacks by Apache raiders grew so great that he ordered their extermination: "...use all means to persuade the Apaches or any tribe to come in for the purpose of making peace, and when you get them together kill all the grown Indians and take the children prisoners and sell them to defray the expense of killing the adult Indians." It is a little-known fact that while Baylor and Hamner were trying to inflame hatred against Native Americans, both men quietly dabbled in land speculation, paying special attention to coveted reservation lands.
With the outbreak of war, The White Man changed editors as well as the focus of most of its stories. While this particular issue does mention presumed depredations committed by Indians against whites, the large majority of its reporting is on the war and the movement of troops. This issue pays particular attention to reports concerning events at Fort Henry, the first important victory for the Union and General Ulysses S. Grant in the Western Theater. Very interesting reading!
