Description
Original Abstract Ink Drawing attributed to Pablo Picasso. One page, 8.25" x 10.5", n.p. [Paris]; 1942. On white paper, recto only. Unsigned. On the verso is a small caption written by Picasso's friend, Surrealist artist and writer, Valentine Hugo (1887-1968), in which she attributes the drawing to Picasso, stating that it was completed at her place in 1942, trying some of her father's music pens with multiple tips (the pens had been rediscovered by her mother in 1941). [Together with]: Three ink pens believed to have been used by Picasso. N.p.; n.d. Each of these pens have multiple tips or teeth, used to make multiple lines with one stroke. Picasso utilized this technique for this artwork, and the stylized drawing of two grasshoppers (featured in the previous lot). Pens are approximately 8 inches long. (We cannot say with certainty that these are the actual pens used by Picasso to make these drawings, but they were kept together with the drawings by Valentine Hugo, and after passing from Hugo to Maurice and Fanny Car, were kept together by the Car family until now).Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. Considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore.
Condition: For the drawing, the paper a bit toned; black paint bled through to the verso; otherwise very good. As for the brushes, there is some wear from use; otherwise good.
