Description
Garth Williams. Illustration #3, Charlotte's Web.Garth Williams. Original preliminary drawing for illustration #3 (appearing on page 6) of Charlotte's Web, 1952: Fern feeds baby Wilbur with a bottle. Ink on paper. Approximately 13.75 x 11.75 inches. Signed in full by Williams and dated 1952 at lower left. Also with Williams' notation in pencil: "This is first drawing of Fern and Wilbur -- I redrew this for the book, making Wilbur smile & fatter. Garth." Matted at some point, there is minor toning to image area (Williams' penciled caption was underneath mat and is not toned); masking tape to top edge of reverse. A few folds and some shallow bends, a couple of tiny nicks along the edges, and a light spot of foxing. Very good. From the Estate of Garth Williams.
