Description

Garth Williams. Illustration #25, Charlotte's Web.

Garth Williams. Original preliminary drawing for illustration #25 (appearing on page 95) of Charlotte's Web, 1952: Wilbur, the terrific pig. Pencil on paper. 10.875 x 8.5 inches. Initialed by Williams at lower right. A tiny spot and what appears to be a shallow paper clip indentation at the top margin, both outside the image area. Fine.

One of the most beloved illustrations in Charlotte's Web, and one that is, in this original pencil drawing, perhaps even warmer and sweeter and more full of character than the final version that was printed in the book. As Peter F. Neumeyer writes in The Annotated Charlotte's Web, "Since White doesn't describe the expression on Wilbur's face, this illustration is testimonial to Williams' own creative bent" (p. 95, note 4). A wonderful, wonderful image. A terrific pig, indeed! From the Estate of Garth Williams.
