Description

Garth Williams. Illustration #22, Charlotte's Web.

Garth Williams. Original preliminary drawing for illustration #22 (appearing on page 83) of Charlotte's Web, 1952: crowds flock to the Zuckermans' barn. Ink on paper. 8.25 x 10.5 inches. Signed in full by Williams at lower right. Shallow paper clip indentation. With Williams' notation in pencil: "Crowds viewing Wilbur." Fine.

E. B. White was not happy with this barn drawing and sent a note to editor Ursula Nordstrom stating his concern that "Garth has drawn a set of double barn doors on a track, but they are at least twelve feet off the ground. Anybody coming through those doors would fall and break his neck. They (the doors) ought to be on ground level -- on the side of the barn, not the end of the barn" (Neumeyer, p. 83, note 11). Ms. Nordstrom's secretary passed these notes on to Williams: "Attached to 20 is the photostat returned by Mr. White showing his indication of where the barn doors should be" (letter to Williams from Mary Russell, dated June 30, 1952). Williams re-did the barn and, in fact, the illustration that appears in the book resembles White's barn in North Brooklin, Maine. From the Estate of Garth Williams.
