Description
Studies of the "Wasp" Schooner, With Detailed Handwritten Suggestions to Garth Williams from Author E. B. White
Garth Williams. ALS from E.B. White to Garth Williams with instructions on how to draw The Wasp, Stuart Little.Garth Williams. Written instructions to the artist from E. B. White and original preliminary drawings of the schooner The Wasp for Stuart Little, 1945. This group contains the following: A two-page Autograph Letter Signed by E. B. White and addressed to Garth Williams, dated 14 April [1945], on two sheets of yellow paper, with central horizontal folds; includes three printed images of schooners and sloops, pasted to the second page. Spots (probably coffee) and a partial coffee ring to the first page. [and:] Original pencil drawings of schooners by Garth Williams. Five large sheets measuring 15.875 x 12 inches, all initialed by Williams; and one piece of tracing paper measuring approximately 8.5 x 10 inches, with ragged edges, presumably torn by the artist, signed in full by Williams. One drawing quite faint, all with shallow folds. All very good or better.
E. B. White, an avid sailor, seems eager to give advice and suggestions to Garth Williams on just how he wants the boat Stuart sails -- The Wasp -- to look. He provides helpful picture guides and describes how boats move when asail. "Dear Mr. Williams, I couldn't find many good pictures but here are 4 [sic] which may help you. The big one shows the wheel of a schooner in rough seas. This happens to be a three-masted boat - The Wasp has only two masts and the Wasp's wheel would not be so close to the mast. If I run across anything better, I'll send it to you. Sincerely, E. B. White."
Also included with this group is a small piece of notepaper with a checklist of helpful notes for the artist, such as "Schooners & sloops," "Time is 1930," "5th Avenue bus should be older model with rear platform & stairs in the rear," and "Mr & Mrs Little - look too much alike." From the Estate of Garth Williams.
