Description

[T. S. Eliot]. Embroidered Cat by a Young T.S. Eliot. [St. Louis: 1894]. Original embroidery on linen. "Tom" written in pencil on the rear of the fabric, and with the paper backing from the original framing present with the ink note: "Christmas 1894 / from Tom [1894 (written again, in pencil)]". Oval printed label from the Thonssen Fine Art Gallery and framers, St. Louis MO. on paper backing. Linen embroidery fabric square (approximately 8.75 x 8.75 inches). Picture of a cat, embroidered with brownish yellow, dark green, and black thread, over ink lines. General light wear and soiling, with pulled threads in places. One larger, darker circular stain at the cat's rear paws. Very good. From a T. S. Eliot Family Collection.

Eliot and his family lived in St. Louis for the first sixteen years of his life, and he would have been six years old in 1894. This depiction of a cat by T.S. Eliot is dated some 45 years before he would publish Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats in 1939, which would in turn inspire and serve as the basis for the musical Cats, adapted by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and winner of Best Musical at the 1983 Tony Awards. The original Broadway production of Cats opened in 1982 (after a London premier in 1981), and was at one time the longest-running Broadway show in history, at eighteen years (the London production also set a record for its run of twenty-one years).
