[Edgar Rice Burroughs]. John Coleman Burroughs (American Artist, 1913-1979). Original oil on canvas painting. Dust jacket art for Tarzan the Magnificent (published Burroughs Inc., 1939). Signed and dated lower right, "John Coleman Burroughs, 1939." Image measures 21 ½ x 19 ¼ inches; 554 x 487 mm (sight). Framed to an overall size of 27 ½ x 25 inches; 696 x 637 mm. Near fine. Not examined out of frame (large chips and other general wear to frame).

After the partnership between illustrator J. Allen St. John and Edgar Rice Burroughs ended, Burroughs turned to his youngest son, John Coleman Burroughs, an accomplished artist in his own right, to illustrate his books. John Coleman Burroughs produced the illustrations for thirteen Edgar Rice Burroughs novels altogether (Heins, p. 209). The younger Burroughs illustrated the dust jacket and five interior black-and-white plates for Tarzan the Magnificent (Zeuschner, p. 467). From the Albert E.
