Description
Winston Churchill: The World Crisis (London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1923-1931), first edition, in six volumes, 536, 557, 292, 589, 474, and 368 pages, marbled endpapers, top gilt edges, illustrated, fold-out maps, half-red-leather and red-cloth bindings with gold lettering and decorations, 8vo (6" x 9"). Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) was one of the most prolific writers of all time. The World Crisis, which covers World War I and its aftermath, was the first of his mammoth, multi-volume narrative histories which also include The Second World War (six volumes, 1948-53) and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples (4 volumes, 1956-58, but which he had begun writing during the 1930s). These ambitious works earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. The World Crisis was sparked by attacks on Churchill in the memoirs of Reginald Brett, 2nd Viscount Esher, a British historian and Liberal politician, but eventually was expanded into a multi-volume history. The book blends military, diplomatic and political history with Churchill's own justifications for his policies during World War I, therefore being more useful as a biographical work than a historical one. Nonetheless, The World Crisis is a substantial literary achievement and, like Churchill's other works, a great read. These beautiful volumes are in near fine condition with some yellowing of the paper but no real flaws on the endpapers or bindings.Auction Info
