Bates (U.S. Army, retired) on a preliminary leaf. Bates was a Custer biographer and author and a friend to Mrs. Elizabeth Custer. Two terminal leaves have pencil notes by bates referring to page numbers in the book. Octavo (7.5" x 5"). 587 pages. Illustrated. Publisher's green-gray cloth pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt and reddish-brown on the front cover and spine.
