Republican Albert J. Beveridge was an historian and twice-elected United States Senator from Indiana in the early years of the twentieth century. When Theodore Roosevelt split from the Republican Party in 1912, forming the new Progressive Party, Beveridge went with him, though Beveridge would never again win public office. As a substitute, Beveridge turned to political scholarship, first penning a Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Chief Justice John Marshall between 1916 and 1919, and then this biography of Abraham Lincoln. Beveridge's Abraham Lincoln was published posthumously in 1928 after he passed away shortly following a second major heart attack in 1927. Though Beveridge was never able to finish his Lincoln biography, his wife decided to have it published as a biography of Lincoln up to the time of his first presidential election. Upon publication, Abraham Lincoln 1809 - 1858 was considered one of the best biographies of Lincoln's early life. Following the publication of Beveridge's biography, William E. Barton, the leading Lincoln academic of the time, called the work "A Noble Fragment" of Lincoln scholarship, and described Beveridge's assessment of Lincoln's political skills as the "real contribution" of the book. Beveridge's masterwork is still held in high esteem by Lincoln scholars who appreciate his attempts to find the true Lincoln, the man behind the legend.
