Description
Kabuki Picture Scroll. (All publication information (if any) in Japanese), about 19 very high quality fold out plates, the single plates fold out to approximately 22", the double plates (forming opposing pairs) to one panoramic image of about 44", bound in beige mottled cloth with red kanji spine titles, housed in beautiful blue cloth case with orange paper lining, title pastedown mounted to front, sealed in the Japanese style with two bone pins, elephant folio (12.5" x 17"), unobtrusive 1" stray mark along the bottom right verso of left panel of fifth plate, top left corner of third plate creased - not affecting image, tiny split at lower left corner of front cover, else fine. The cloth of the case is rubbed and scuffed, else very good. This book contains the original size color reproductions of all the scenes painted on the "Kabuki Picture-Scroll", which is one of the most important art objects kept in the Tokugawa Art museum. The picture scroll, also known as the Uneme Kabuki Zoshi, shows scenes from Okuni Kabuki, the predecessor of the Kubuki plays we see today.Auction Info
