Ngaio Marsh. A Man Lay Dead. London: 1934. First edition.
Ngaio Marsh. A Man Lay Dead. London: Geoffrey Bles, 1934. First edition. Octavo. 287, [1] pages. Publisher's red cloth, spine and front stamped in black; all text block edges trimmed; original illustrated dust jacket. Backstrip faded with small crease starting down center and some small, mild spots of soiling; spine ends a bit rolled and worn; boards mildly rubbed, discolored, and a bit soiled; minor wear and soft bumping to edges. Text block unevenly but softly browned with age; speckle-staining along top edge, with some faint surface abrasions, spots of rubbing, and foxing to remaining edges; mild discoloration to endpapers, particularly free endpapers from exposure to pastedowns, with some scattered specks of foxing; previous owner gift inscription at front free endpaper; foxing sprinkled throughout interior, most pronounced at first and last several leaves; handful of leaves at middle of text block with tiny tears extending in from fore-edges. Jacket backed with brown paper; generally very rubbed, worn, and creased, with some soiling; some nicking along edges, particularly at spine and flap fold ends and bottom edges of front and rear panels; several repaired splits and tears, most short. Very good book in a good jacket. Marsh's first novel, and the debut of her detective Roderick Alleyn.
