Description
A Beautiful Set Illustrated With 155 Vivid
Hand-Colored Plates
John James Audubon and John Bachman. The Quadrupeds of
North America. New-York: Published by V.G. Audubon,
1849, 1851, and 1854. First octavo edition. Three volumes. viii,
383, [1]; [2], 334, [2, blank]; [4], 348 pages. Complete with all
155 fine hand-colored lithographed plates after Audubon and J.W.
Audubon by W.E. Hitchcock and R. Trembly. With original tissue
guards. Finely bound in recent green morocco accented with
elaborate floral designs stamped in gilt on the boards and spine;
gilt dentelles; titles stamped in gilt on tan leather labels and
mounted within compartments on the spine. Top edges gilt. Marbled
endpapers. A beautifully clean and bright set in about fine
condition. The Quadrupeds was first published in three elephant
folio volumes between 1845 and 1848 in thirty parts, to correspond
to three volumes, with 150 colored plates. The text appeared
subsequently in 1846, 1851, and 1852. This was supplemented in 1854
by an additional volume of text and six plates. In 1849, 1851, and
1854 the octavo edition was released in thirty-one parts, followed
by a bound octavo edition with the same dates. This edition
contained 155 plates, being all those in the original folio
edition, plus five of the six in the 1854 folio supplement, reduced
by means of the camera lucida. The octavo edition was seen
through the press by Audubon's sons, John W. and Victor, as the
author was in declining health during its preparation and died in
January of 1851. Bound copies of the octavo edition with the V.G.
Audubon imprint, including some in publisher's bindings, have been
cited with various combinations of dates, some as late as 1856.
