Description
With 300 Hand-Colored Plates Depicting Insects
Jan Christiaan Sepp. Beschouwing der Wonderen Gods, in de Minstgeachte Schepzelen. Of Nederlandsche Insecten... Amsterdam: J. C. Sepp, [1762-1842].Six quarto volumes. All six volumes with hand-colored additional engraved titles with wreaths of flowers and butterflies. With 300 folding hand-colored engraved plates present. Plates 30 (in volume three), and 45 & 49 (in volume four) mis-numbered (as issued).
Uniformly bound in nineteenth-century three-quarter sheep over speckled paper boards. Spines decoratively ruled in gilt with gilt titles on red leather spine title labels. Text edges sprinkled red. Moderate wear and soiling to the bindings. Small gouge to spine of volume one. Some chipping to spine head of volume four. Most corners bumped or exposed. Some hinges a bit tender, but most are in excellent shape. A few pages creased in volume one. Volume six rebacked with the original leather laid down, and with new endpapers. Minimal occasional spotting, but largely a very clean set of Sepp's landmark work on insects in very good condition.
