Description

An Attractive Set of Michaux and Nuttall, with 277 Hand-Colored Plates

F. Andrew Michaux and Thomas Nuttall. The North American Sylva; or, a Description of the Forest Trees of the United States, Canada, and Nova Scotia. Philadelphia: Rice, Rutter,1865.

Five quarto volumes. With 277 hand-colored plates: 156 hand-colored stipple-engraved plates and 121 hand-colored lithograph plates. Frontispiece portrait in volume one. Tissue guards present. Many of the engraved plates are from drawings by Pierre Joseph Redouté, his brother Henri Joseph Redoute, or Pancrace Bassa. The lithograph plates are primarily without credit, though a few are credited to J. Worley.

Publisher's three-quarter brown morocco over beveled marbled boards, spines tooled and ruled in blind and lettered in gilt, five raised bands, coated endpapers. All edges gilt. Some wear to headcaps, joints and corners, some rubbing to edges, some light foxing to some plates, though most are clean and bright. Overall, very good.

"It is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind, and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty."
