Stuart Palmer. The Penguin Pool Murder. New York: Brentano's Publishers, 1931. First edition. Octavo (7.5 x 5.125 inches; 189 x 130 mm.). [2, blank], x, [2, fly-title (verso blank)], 304, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's gray cloth, spine lettered in black, penguin figure stamped in black on front board; top edge of the text block trimmed, others untrimmed; plain endpapers; in original dust jacket, priced $2.00. Spine just barely leaning; boards very slightly bowed; spine ends very gently pushed; bottom corners softly bumped; covers just a little soiled, with a narrow discolored strip near the fore-edge of the rear board. Front free endpaper with a previous owner's signature and "1932" (with quotation marks), seemingly written in two different hands and two very thin stretches of discoloration near the top and bottom edge (also visible on the read free endpaper, but to a lesser extent). Dust jacket lightly soiled, particularly at the spine panel and folds; edges lightly worn with a short (about three quarters of one inch) closed tear at the upper edge of the rear panel; few other nicks or tiny chips at the fold edges. Near fine. Scarce in dust jacket with the only record found in Rare Book Hub being the Goldstone copy sold by Heritage in 2017, that jacket restored. Basis for the 1932 RKO Radio Pictures film of the same name starring Edna May Oliver as Miss Hildegarde Withers. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone.
