First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Harry [--], / with my best wishes / Raymond Chandler / La Jolla June 22, 1954." Octavo (8 x 5.25 inches; 205 x 135 mm.). [iv], 316 pages. Publisher's two-color cloth, backstrip and half of boards covered in light blue cloth, with other half of boards in light yellowish green cloth, spine and front board lettered in dark green; top edge stained dark green; in original dust jacket. Spine just barely askew; backstrip only a shade dulled; board edges rubbed. Light spotting to topstain; faint offsetting to front endpapers, partially occupying same area as inscription. Dust jacket spine ends worn with small chip to crown; some light wear to edges and folds with a few nicks and some very minor creasing; occasional interior wear causing some very minor color loss, mostly to spine panel; a short closed tear to bottom edge of front panel and to the top edge of the rear panel. Still, very good or better, housed in a custom clamshell case. Bruccoli A10.2.a. Winner of the 1955 Edgar Award for best novel.
