Description
[Anthony Berkeley]. Francis Iles. Before the Fact. A Murder Story for Ladies. London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1932. First edition. Octavo (7.25 x 4.875 inches; 184 x 125 mm.). 352 pages. Publisher's full black cloth, spine lettered in yellow; all edges trimmed; original dust jacket on yellow paper. Spine somewhat skewed. Light rubbing with some moderate shelf wear to binding, particularly at joints and spine ends; corners very lightly bumped. Edges of text blocks slightly yellowed with a few spots of soiling. Endpapers unevenly toned, with blurb tipped to front free endpaper. Normal age yellowing throughout. One or two leaves with short tears extending into margins. Exposed panels of dust jacket mildly toned and rubbed; a bit of edge wear with a touch of fraying, particularly at spine and flap fold ends; a bit of wear at creases. About near fine in a near fine jacket. Basis for Alfred Hitchcock's 1941 film Suspicion, starring Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine. Uncommon in jacket.
