"Roman maestro Giuseppe Pintado [fl. 1790s] was already using concepts such as the 'perceived bass,' or basso sensibile, in 1794" (Nicholas Baragwanath, The Italian Traditions and Puccini: Compositional Theory and Practice Nineteenth-Century Opera (Bloomington, Indiana: Indiana University Press, 2011), page 163).
