Puccinelli, 1794. First edition. Octavo (7.875 x 5.125 inches; 200
x 131 mm.). 159, [1, blank] pages. Signature collation: A-H8 I-M4.
Decorative woodcut title vignette; decorative woodcut head- and
tail-piece.Later purple and brown marbled paper over thin boards, rebacked with gray marbled paper. Light to moderate foxing and browning; gathering D (pages 49-64) quite browned; small faint dampstains at the outer edge and in the gutter margin of D1-E3 (pages 49-70); additional minor dampstaining to outer edge of M3 and M4 (pages 157-[160]); small wormtrack in the gutter margin of F3-M4 (pages 85-[160]), just touching one letter on L2 recto (page 147); paper flaw to lower corner of L1 (pages 145/146) and tiny paper flaw to upper corner of M3 (pages 157/158); a few leaves splitting at lower gutter. A very good copy. Small bookseller's ticket of music antiquarian Hermann Baron on front pastedown: "H. Baron / Music and Books, / 136 Chatsworth Road, / London, N. W. 2., England."
Giuseppe Pintado (José Pintado) was a Spanish Jesuit who went to Rome, when the Jesuits were expelled from Spain in 1767, where he pursued his musical interests. According to Eitner, Pintado was a Roman violinist.
"Roman maestro Giuseppe Pintado [fl. 1790s] was already using concepts such as the 'perceived bass,' or basso sensibile, in 1794" (Nicholas Baragwanath, The Italian Traditions and Puccini: Compositional Theory and Practice Nineteenth-Century Opera (Bloomington, Indiana: Indiana University Press, 2011), page 163).
