Description

The Earliest English Work on Medical Psychology

Thomas Willis. De Anima Brutorum Quae Hominis Vitalis ac Sensitiva est, Exercitationes Duae. Prior Physiologica...Altera Pathologica... Oxford: Theatro Sheldoniano [Sheldonian Theatre], 1672. First edition. Quarto. [lvi], 563, [11, Index], [1, blank] pages. Includes the five-page publisher's catalog, but the errata slip was neither cancelled in nor pasted onto any leaf (therefore, likely a first issue). With eight engraved plates, five of which are folding. Contemporary full brown leather with gilt spine titles in compartments with four raised bands. Binding worn and abraded, with short splits to the joints at the spine head. Corners bumped and rubbed. Hinges starting but still strong. Minor occasional foxing or spotting within the text. Very good.

A rare and important work, regarded by Willis as his greatest work, and generally accepted as the first book on medical psychology. F. J. Cole, in his A History of Comparative Anatomy, wrote that the book is "a solid contribution to the armamentarium of the comparative anatomist." This is the rarer Oxford imprint, being also printed in London the same year for more general circulation. Ownership signature of antiquarian book collector Cuthbert Tunstall, later Cuthbert Constable, on the title page. The bookplate of his son, William Constable, affixed to the front pastedown.

Madan 2953. Wing W2825.
