[Harvey Cushing]. [Elliott Cutler, editor]. INSCRIBED.
Cushing Birthday Volume: To Harvey Cushing from
His Pupils. [together with:] Typed Two Page
Autobiography SIGNED by Harvey Cushing and Other Papers.
[N.p.]: [n.p., 1929]. A collection of eighty-four medical papers by
past students of the great neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing and
contributed to this book in celebration of their "Chief's" sixtieth
birthday.Cushing's secretary Madeline Stanton's copy. Octavo. xxi, 1111, [6] pages. Black and white portrait of Cushing. Heavily illustrated in black and white with a few color plates. Laid-in folded "Clinical chart" showing temperatures, pulse and respiratory rates. Half black morocco over red covered boards with gilt lettering on front cover: "To/ Harvey Cushing/ from His Pupils" and gilt rules. Inscribed on the front fly-leaf to Cushing's secretary, Madeline Stanton from Elliott Cutler, who initially suggested the idea of a birthday volume, thanking her for her assistance in assembling the book. Holograph ink corrections to three paged vita of Cushing at the front. Boards rubbed, light soiling, leather loss to front board's upper right corner, lacking leather backstrip (spine exposed), leather chips along both joints, joints cracked; partially erased pencil writing on front fly-leaf below ink inscription, occasional foxing or minor smudges.
Laid in is a typed two-page autobiographical essay SIGNED by Harvey Cushing. Holograph pencil corrections most likely in Stanton's hand. Light edge wear with small chips. Also laid in are five small slips of paper with ink and pencil holograph notes, including an extension of Cushing's vita up to the year 1932, one with the note: "[?] copied these in the Chief's (home) copy/ 2 Sept. 1930." Included is a typed sheet of the extensions. There is a single leaf double sided ALS to "Miss Stanton" from contributor and friend Dr. Leo M. Davidoff on his letterhead, dated May 8th, 1929, describing Cushing's reaction to the birth of the Davidoff's daughter. "The Chief was as thoughtful as ever, and as soon as he learnt of her appearance addressed a letter in his own hand to Helen [?] Davidoff - praising her upon her choice of parents." And a holograph ink postcard to "Miss Stanton" from an unidentified correspondent from Würzburg, thanking her for the amusing stories about "Cushing's 'Festschrift' day", and regretting he could not have attended.
Overall a worn but good book with a fantastic provenance and manuscript material that celebrate the life and character of one of the most important surgeons of the twentieth-century.
