Description
Mary Austin Holley. Texas. Lexington, KY: J. Clarke & Co., 1836. First edition. 12mo (in sixes). [2], viii, 410 pages. Lacking original map, facsimile folding map inserted. Publisher's brown cloth, printed paper spine label. Cream-colored endpapers, all edges trimmed. Housed in a custom clamshell of quarter leather and marbled boards, red leather spine label lettered in gilt, spine ruled and stamped in brown.While some bibliographers categorize this text as a second edition of Mrs. Holley's 1833 book, Texas: Observations Historical, Geographical and Descriptive... (e.g. Howes, Sabin), Jenkins notes, "an entirely different book from Mrs. Holley's 1833 volume, this contains a great deal more information on Texas history, geography, and society... it includes the best physical description of Texas up to that time, and a clear concise analysis of the colonization and land grant system and of Austin's colonization activities." Mary Austin Holley was a cousin of Stephen F. Austin; in fact, the Father of Texas" stayed in his cousin's home and gave her advise on the manuscript of this book before it was published.
Condition: Rebacked, with portions of original spine laid-down, boards scuffed and stained, corners rubbed. Lacking some leaves, supplied in facsimile, including Contents leaf, Dedication leaf, all Preface leaves, and the first Introduction leaf. Folding map supplied in facsimile. Moderate foxing throughout and some chips and tears, confined to the margins, final text leaf with contemporary ink ownership. Good.
