Description
Mary Austin Holley. Texas. Observations, Historical, Geographical and Descriptive, in a Series of Letters, Written during a Visit to Austin's Colony, with a view to a permanent settlement in that country, in the Autumn of 1831. Baltimore: Armstrong & Plaskitt, 1833. First edition, 12mo, 5-167 pages including Appendix. Folding engraved map of Texas and Coahuila (10.75" x 13.5") by W. Hooker. Copyright notice on a small slip affixed at lower portion of dedication page. Bound original salmon-pink cloth has age-toned to light brown, gilt titling and decorative cartouche on coverMrs. Holley was a cousin of Stephen F. Austin, to whom the work is dedicated. Holley traveled to Bolivar, Texas, to visit her brother Henry, and was delighted with all she saw and experienced there. She noted that "Texas, until the last few years, has been, literally, a terra incognita. It is uncertain how long this extensive and valuable country would have remained unknown and unsettled, had not the bold enterprise and perseverance of the Austin's, torn away the veil that hid it from the world, and redeemed it from the wilderness, by the settlement of a flourishing colony. With this settlement, a new era has dawned upon Texas."
In her book, Mrs. Holley gives a detailed description of the land, resources, inhabitants, and existing settlements in Texas, and expresses satisfaction that slavery is prohibited under the present laws. In the extensive appendix, she offers much practical advice to those, like herself, who are considering emigration. The detailed map appears in several states; this example conforms to Streeter's 2nd state with "Beales and Rayulles Grant" at top left, Milam's Grant labeled "Beales Grant" and Hooker's name added beneath the title. Considered an essential addition to any Texana library, Mrs. Holley's book is the first known history of Texas written in English, and, as such, is highly desirable.
Condition: As noted, covers toned to brown color, with minor wear and spotting. Titling and decoration on cover are worn and barely discernible. Spine and corners are bumped and worn. Map is toned in placed and creased, but intact and in fine condition. Pages are moderately foxed throughout. Overall very good condition.
