Description
First Venetian Edition of Ptolemy's Geography-Containing the First Cordiform Map and Only the Second World Map to Depict America
Claudius Ptolemaeus [Ptolemy]. Liber Geographiae cum
Tabulis et universali figura et cum additione locorum quae a
recentioribus reperta sunt diligenti cura emendatus et
impressus. [Venice: Jacobius Pentius de Leucho, 20
March 1511]. First Venetian edition of Ptolemy's Geographia,
based on the Latin translation of Jacobus Angelus and edited by
Bernardinus Sylvanus of Basle. Sylvanus amended Ptolemy's maps to
take account of modern discoveries, and in printing the major
place-names in red provided the earliest example of two colour
printing in cartography. The cordiform map of the "modern" world is
the second printed world map in an edition of Ptolemy to show
America.Folio. [62] leaves. All leaves mounted on linen guards. Title printed in red, text printed in red and black in double columns of sixty lines. Twenty-eight double-page woodcut maps on thirty leaves (following the text), all but the last (the cordiform world map by Sylvanus) printed on both recto and verso, with the names of places in red. The first four maps have their seas colored by an early hand. Four large woodcut diagrams in the text. Capital spaces with guide letters.
Modern half dark brown morocco over brown morocco-grain cloth-covered boards. Spine lettered in gilt with raised bands; top edge gilt; marbled endpapers. Hinges repaired. Several leaves with large very neat and mostly marginal paper repairs; only the last map, the cordiform map by Sylvanus, with areas of loss in the lower portion of each leaf. Some browning, staining, and thumbsoiling throughout the text. An excellent copy.
Adams P2218. Nordenskiöld II, 204. Phillips, Atlases, 358. Sabin 66477. Sander 5979. Shirley Mapping of the World 31, 32.
