Description

"First Printed Map to be Devoted to the Pacific Ocean" (Burden)

[Maps]. Abraham Ortelius. Maris Pacifici, (quod volgò Mar del Zur) cum regionibus circumiacentibus, insulisque in eodem passim sparsis, novissima descriptio. [Antwerp, Plantin Press], 1589 [actually, 1590 or 1592]. First edition of this copperplate map (taken from Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Additamentum IV in 1590), first state (with "1589" in the cartouche on the lower left), first issue, presumed second printing from 1592 (text in Latin on verso, with manuscript "13," (usually a "6" at the bottom right, probably an error); presumed first printings lack the ink signature- in later editions, a "6" was printed with the text). This map is hand-colored (possibly later hand-coloring). Approximately 16 x 20.25 inches. Mild toning, some rubbing to edges, one vertical crease, the crease is reinforced with paper on verso, some additional tape reinforcements on verso, and one small repair at the bottom, not affecting image. A superb example of this very rare map. This map is significant for several reasons. It is the first to be devoted to the Pacific; it is one of the earliest maps to differentiate North and South America by name; it is the first map to show Japan and New Guinea as being closer to Asia than to America; it is one of the earliest maps to show California as a peninsula; and it depicts the west coast of North America more accurately than any maps before it. Also, near the center, there is a depiction of Magellan's surviving ship, the Victoria, plowing its way through the ocean, with an angel guiding it. Burden 74.
