Description
Blaeu's Hand-Colored World Map with Elaborate Ornamentation
[Map]. William Janszoon Blaeu. Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula auct Guiljelmo Blaeuw. [Amsterdam: 1630]. 21.5 x 16.5 inches. Double page copperplate engraved map of the world, hand-colored (not examined out of frame). Attractively matted, glazed, and framed (32 x 27 inches overall). Very minor worming in the lower margin, but no evidence of damage to the image. Evidence suggests that the paper has been washed and perhaps bleached. The coloring is modern. Included is a letter from G. B. Manasek authenticating this map as an original impression from the original plate. This is perhaps the finest and most desirable of the world maps from the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. First issued in 1606 this map was used in Willem Janszoon Blaeu's atlases until 1662. The regular grid of latitude and longitude lines indicates that Gerard Mercator's projection was used by Blaeu in producing this map. The exaggerated sizes and shapes of land masses in the polar regions are characteristic of the Mercator projection.
The map is recognized for its elaborate ornamentation and embellishment with ships, sea monsters, compass roses, and richly decorated border panels. Across the top are allegorical representations of the sun, the moon, and the five known planets - Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The elements; Fire, Air, Water, and Land, are depicted on the left panel, while the four seasons are illustrated on the right panel. The seven wonders of the ancient world are arranged along the bottom panel.
