Description
William Wordsworth. Autograph letter signed ("Uncle W. Wordsworth") to his nephew Christopher. Rydal Mount, [early July 1848].One page, small 8vo (180 x 110 mm), on a bifolium. Addressed in holograph on integral leaf verso: "The Revd C. Wordsworth DD / Little Cloisters / Westminster / By favor of the Revd. E J Hornby." With an engraved portrait of the poet.
A brief note to his nephew introducing a rector seeking a preferment. In full: "My dear Christopher, The Bearer is the Revd E. Hornby whose Letter I forwarded to you lately. Your affectionate Uncle, W. Wordsworth." Endorsed at bottom in Christopher's(?) hand, "First week in July - 1848."
Reverend Hornby of Merton College, Oxford, was rector of Winnithrop, Lancashire, rector of Bury, Lancashire from 1850, and Canon of Manchester from 1855. He was "a pupil of Faber's, he had married Miss Roughsedge of Fox Ghyll and was not seeking preferment. W. W. also knew his father, the Revd. James Hornby (1775-1855), rector of Winwick, Lancs. From 1813, and editor of the Remains of Alexander Knox" (Letters).
Condition: Minor soiling, creased at folds, a few ink smudges or blots, tiny tear on upper edge of first page with tape remnant near upper corner on verso, integral leaf with upper corner chipped and tape remnants along two edges on verso (affecting a few letters of address).
