Valentin Haüy. Autograph Letter Signed. "Haüy."More Information:
One page in French, 7.25" x 8.25", [Paris]: January 3, 1792. Addressed to an unnamed correspondent, this letter serves as an introduction to the family of a prospective student or investor for his famed school for the blind [English translation], "I have the honor of including here for you the preamble of the Prospectus of the School for Blind Children. As for the conditions, I am adopting the same ones as those for the Deaf and Dumb temporarily until the Administrative Office approves or changes them. For the past two months I have had the satisfaction of having albs and chasubles lent to us to conduct Mass but they are being taken back soon and we will not have anything to use for Friday Day of Kings unless you have the kindness to get the Director's approval for the attached note, as you promised."
Valentin Haüy (1745-1822) was the French founder, in 1785, of the first school for the blind, the Institute for Blind Youth in Paris (now Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles, or the National Institute for the Young Blind).
Condition: The letter has a horizontal fold, some light edge wear; otherwise very good.
