Description

Letter from Thomas Hardy to A. E. Housman

Thomas Hardy. Autograph letter signed ("Thomas Hardy"), to A. E. Housman. Max Gate, Dorchester, 13 October 1919.

2 pages, 8vo (178 x 134 mm). Housed in a cloth folding case.

A wonderful letter from Hardy, thanking Housman for sending him a copy of his book of poetry with a manuscript poem, in full:

"I find to my pleasure that among the poet friends who have been so kind as to send me a book of verses, you are one, and represented by a beautiful little poem which I cannot remember reading before, though it sounds your own particular note. Please accept my very warm thanks for such an interesting MS which I shall always value, & which will, I hope, be valued by others after I am gone as a relic of the Shropshire Lad.
I had meant to be often in Cambridge when I last saw you there, but the barbarism of the age we live in has prevented it & now I hardly go anywhere, indeed hardly want to, though I often think of faces I should like to see again---among them your own.
Believe me, with best wishes,
Yours most sincerely,
Thomas Hardy."

Condition: Some minor wrinkling and short tear at upper righthand corner; creased at horizontal center fold.

Provenance: Sold by Scribner Rare Books, New York, 1936, item 123b. From the William A. Strutz Library.
