Description
Ralph Waldo Emerson. Autograph draft (unsigned) of "Fate" from The Conduct of Life. One page, 7 5/8 x 7 3/8 inches, mounted to brown/gray cardstock to an overall size of 8 1/4 x 7 5/8 inches, no place; no date. Extensively corrected in the poet's hand. The poem reads, in full:"The free winds told him what they knew,
Discoursed of fortune as they blew.
Omens & signs that filled the air
To him authentic witness bare;
The Birds brot auguries on their wings,
And caroled undeceiving things,
His telegraph & letters
Were writ in vaster character
And on his mind at dawn of day
Soft shadows of the evening lay."
With a card (4 7/8 x 2 3/8 inches) stating, in period ink: "'Fate' from The Conduct of Life by Ralph Waldo Emerson; original draft with corrections of a later day."
Condition: Mounted to brown/gray cardstock and formerly hinge mounted to a larger board; gray/brown cardstock no longer mounted to larger board but remnants of hinge and tape remain. Light mat burn; visible adhesive from the verso where poem is mounted to board.
